About Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar yoga is a set of postures that was developed
by
BKS Iyengar.
Each pose is entered into with precision and focus on muscular and
skeletal alignment. It develops strength and stamina, as well as
concentration and flexibility.
When practising Iyengar yoga, students often use props in order to
enter challenging poses safely and to develop their
knowledge of a
specific pose. Props help students understand more about the
alignment of a posture, and allow people with more limited flexibility
the experience of the poses that they find difficult, making Iyengar
yoga suitable for all.
Iyengar classes typically begin with standing poses, moving on
to
forward bends, twists and seated poses. Inversions are added to a
class when the teacher thinks students have developed their strength
and understanding of the basic postures. Classes end with Savasana,
a relaxing pose which promotes a feeling of peace and fulfilment. |
